Koh Samui is the second-largest island in Thailand and the largest island in the Chumphon Archipelago of over 80 (mostly uninhabited) islands which form the Ang Thong National Marine Park, a kayaking and snorkeling paradise. Samui is large enough for serious exploration by the adventurous kind, but it is easy to go around the entire island in just a couple of hours by motorbike or car using the main road.
In the early 1970s the first backpackers travelling on the back of a longtail boat arrived on Koh Samui. For years after that the island had just a few bungalows and a trickle of adventurers. Things started to change in the early 1990s when tourists started arriving on full boats and since then the place has grown significantly. Samui is now the second-most popular island destination in Thailand.
The largest and most popular beaches on Samui are Chaweng, Choeng Mon, Mae Nam, Bophut and Lamai. But for those looking for a relaxed place to spend their holiday or business trip, there are over 20 or so beaches to visit. As for activities, there is something for everyone. Sun lovers and water sports enthusiasts will be in heaven on Chaweng beach, whilst culture and nature fans can fill their time visiting temples, trekking in the jungle or enjoy Thai cooking class and learning the art of Thai massage.
Koh Samui is a gem in the Gulf of Thailand, with modern amenities and activities, yet conserving the idyllic simplicity of a tropical hideaway. Stunning white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters await, as do the Thai people and their welcoming smile, an embodiment of a rich and tolerant culture every bit as fascinating as the island itself.
